A Night of Imagination is inspired by the world of an artist. This is not your typical Fashion show. It is also a Hair Show with Fantasy styles designed by Blondie, the runner up contestant on Oxygen's Hair Battle Spectacular. Ashley is always looking for a way to combine her creativity and her love for giving back. Creativity for a Cause was born! All proceeds from the ticket sales will be donated to the Non profit organization Wigs For Kids. They provide hand made prosthetic wigs for children that have suffered from hair loss. All wigs made by this organization are donated to these children at no cost to the family.

We will also be having a raffle event that you do not want to miss so come early! During our Sweets inspired cocktail hour we will be having a chinese raffle to win some amazing prizes of your choosing. All raffle sales will be donated as well to Wigs for Kids. Matt and Patti had planned a beach wedding in Cape Cod, but hurricane Irene had other plans! Uncle's who where excited they could go to a wedding in Jimmy Buffet attire found themselves at a mansion wedding in flip-flops! However, the mansion at the Ocean's Edge in Brewster, MA was transformed into a ;ast minute reception hall and it was amazing! Special thank you to Mary Kate Malat who was the second photographer for it event, she captured some memorable moments! We where stuck two days post event in a hotel room while the storm passed!

I've been Imagining a weekend off in the Spring time for years. I absolutely love being a wedding photographer, but one of the drawbacks is never having weekends off when your friends who are not in the wedding business do. While I wouldn't trade my job for another ever, I have spent years of driving by people having all sorts of fun on a sunny Saturday afternoon and wondering what it's like to do that! Last weekend due to a cancelled event I was able to spend the weekend with a close friend for his birthday. Everything about the whole weekend was magical right down to a rainbow for the ride, a short thunderstorm on a historic schooner and coming across Strawberry Fields while strolling thru Central Park.

Gosh, it is crazy that only a few years ago my daughter and I where at the Strawberry Festival and a very tall young girl peaked around a fence and said to us. "Hey, what's up guys?" That girl was Taylor Swift! Move ahead several years and that girl has made an international name for herself!
Of course, we enjoyed the show and immediately we became of member of her fan club! Since then we have learned that if you would like good seats at a concert in the future, join the artists fan club which will usually give you access to the Ticketmaster.com presale password!

Last week, Len & I went to visit Amy Wilkins at Martha Stewart. She showed us around all the departments, and we got to see the craft room and test kitchens. The prop room was my favorite though, second only to the photography studio. And finally, I got to discuss & submit one of my weddings to the Real Wedding editor. Fingers crossed! We spent the rest of the day walking around the city and shopping. Len had his first visit to Bergdorf Goodman. Showed some of the shoes I own (Yeah, I'm in trouble).

Miss Maryland was first runner up. Shelly will now represent America at the Mrs World pageant. The pageant was held in Korea last year but the new location has not yet been announced. The shoppe is nestled right outside of the Choate Campus where I photographed a wedding last weekend, I had to passby last time to get there in time, I was excited to get to go back!

I've been hearing a lot about this place!

Well, it didn't quite turn out the day we planned it to be today. We had two engagement sessions scheduled in NYC. When driving rain outed those, it left Len and I with a huge hole in our schedules and we both said "roadtrip" and headed out! As wedding photographers it is almost unheard of that we both have a weekend day off. We decided to check out a few new locations we had heard of for some future shoots! Little did we know we would find many more along the way then we bargained for! Here are some of the images from the day!

I photographed a retro fundraiser for a jazz festival in New Haven and the Lady Day movie which they are planning on shooting in CT in the near future. What fun! Miss CT 2006 Heidi Voight was kind enough to pose for a few photos for me. (Okay who is she kidding, she loves the attention and that works out well for me!) I'm so excited! It's seems lately everytime I turn on the TV., I see someone I've photographed recently! Last night I sweated it out for Katie Stevens on American Idol as she remained "SAFE" I watched Ryan Seacrest yell at Simon last week (yup shot him at Miss America). Flipped the channel to hear something about Rush Limbaugh making a big announcement (ditto MAO). Taylor Swift, I see everywhere still (last Feb), Mario Lopez Ditto, and next month it's rumored I will be shooting an "A" list event (I'm going to say rumored because I don't want to jinx it and honestly I can't tell you about it.). Life is getting weirder everyday,, but I wouldn't change it for the world!

Well, I'm guilty and my readers who are not on Facebook have scolded me! Seems Facebook has taken over my updating time! Wedding season is fastly approaching and I'm itching to get out there and show them what I can do this year. I've always aspired to be a trendsetter and I'm excited that some of the techiques I've used for a few years now are catching on! All winter I've been thinking, reading and searching for new ideas and catching on to some new trends. Hey, who knew that lens flare would ever be fashionable in wedding photos?? I remember spending hours as a newby photographer trying to correct for it. LOL Life changes, so does what is cool and NOT cool with wedding photos. Thinking back here is a list of trends that where popular over the years!

Wedding photographers will laugh when they read this time line:

1970's Everything took place superimposed in a brandy sifter!
1980's A bride's album wasn't complete without a photo of the happy couple floating over the church.
1990's Nothing really changed, but words wedding photography where replaced with wedding photojournalism. (Real photojournalism didn't happen until digital photography came to be because photographers realized that even though a bride would ask for photojournalistic photos they would still just purchase the posed ones.)However the idea that bride & grooms need not be looking at the camera in every shot emerged.
2000-Everything this year at a wedding was tilted
2001-2003-The close up years! The closer the photo the better, forget about everything else.
2004-This year bride's refused to show their faces everything was photographed from the back.
2005-Everything was photographed from the top, including the cake, bride and grooms had to be looking up and photographers had to bring a ladder to the wedding.
2006- Fisheye Lens time play Where's Waldo to find the lucky couple.
2007- Details, details, Don't forget the Nome in the front yard to the smiley face reflector in the neighbors driveway! Oh and remember when grandma used to curse at grandpa for cutting off heads in photos?? Well his art is finally being recognized this year!
2008-Photojournalism Only please, except for these 300 poses.
2009-New Flash!! Len's flare and that icky cast caused by it are now cool!! and "Help I just burnt my dress and want it back" is a popular tune bride's are singing!
2010- All pics are too be back lit and taken in the dark at night! No exceptions gang!!

Who knows what the next year will bring?? I'm excited to see!

Katie Stevens rocked the stage tonight on American Idol and NO I didn't think she was too pageant-ty. Why?? Because I personally know Katie has only done a few pageants and was very new to them when she competed in those. It is so funny how the media picks up on a bit o' info and runs with it. She was amazingly talented (so obvious) when she competed, when she sang at rehearsals the whole place would stop and listen, but in my opinion perhaps not pageant-ty enough for the win?? Does that make sense?? If you are a pageant guru, then yup you where rolling on the floor laughing with me also when you heard that one!! Katie was the first contestant I shot last season and when I photographed Katie for 2009 CT's Outstanding Teen, she had such a refreshing natural look that I decided to continue with that look for the rest of the contestants instead of going with a more pageant patty look!

The Warner Theatre will be holding two open auditions for children ages 9-16 for roles in the upcoming main stage musical, OLIVER! at the historic theatre. Roles include the title role of Oliver, Artful Dodger, Workhouse Children and Fagin's Gang. Children are encouraged to come dressed in clothing appropriate for the role. It has been a long wonderful week! Thursday evening I was lucky enough to sit back stage at the 25th Anniversary concert of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as part of the ADA loop (at least I think that is what it is called). It was an experience I will never forget! I got to see Jerry Lee Lewis, Crosby, Stills & Nash, James Taylor, Bonnie Rait, Sam Moore, Jeff Beck, Stevie Wonder, Sting, Darlene Love, Bruce Springsteen, Dion, BB King, Tom Hanks, Jackson Browne, John Fogerty,Simon & Garfunkel, Johnny Legend and well I just missed Billy Joel. What was more amazing was being able to see what was going on both in front of the stage and the organization behind the stage. The bands hanging out and greeting each other before they went out and oh yeah one brief encounter with Paul Simon in the hall (so familiar to me I didn't even blink). Most of these guys faces where plastered on my wall during high school and it seemed like they where old friends. I cried during Sounds of Silence and watched Steve Wonder lipsync backstage to "Bridge Over Troubled Water". I didn't get home until 3:30 am the next morning and had to head to the studio the next day but I never got tied I was so excited!

Why a separate website for photogenics?? Well because I needed a website that is simple to use and easy to navigate for my pageant clients. Also, I love photographing weddings, but with both specialties I felt is would be easier for each type of client to find what they are looking for specifically and quickly. I'm always amazing when I get on a website and I can't figure how to use it or what the headers really mean. Are you getting married?? Well that new website is coming soon!

Costume Day at the Studio Benefit

This years costume day at the studio will be held October 31st from 9am-9pm at Catherine Fiehn Photography 226 New Haven Ave Milford, CT 06460 Reservations are not needed. For a $5.00 donation, each participant will get a professional photo high resolution jpeg emailed to them and a treat. Well tonight I did something I rarely do. I was picking my daughter up from a class trip and looked up to see the biggest moon I'd ever seen. After I dropped everyone off I headed out with my camera to find an unobstructed spot to take a few pics. I honestly wasn't expecting much, but I surprised myself big time. I'm beside myself with this image.

Every once in a while I get a bit of affirmation that what I do is important. Inever became a doctor (what I would have told you in 4th grade) or cancer researcher, but I never realize how much joy photographs bring and the value they hold as time moves on. Today I read a CNN article about a man whose house exploded his first priority was to know that parents where safe and sound but check out the second part! I couldn't help but grin a bit!

My dogs are still barking! Yesterday Len from Len's Photography and I hit the Big E! Well we did have a little business there. It was Connecticut day! Miss Connecticut Sharilynn Kusiak and Miss Connecticut's Outstanding Teen Acacia Courtney had an appearance (see the parade photo) also Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell was there with her foot guard. As a photographer, I would have probably cropped this photo a bit differently but Dustin Hoffman's twin in the background makes the shot IMO!!

Last night 30 Rock yet again received a Emmy! This is especially exciting for me because I was in episode 3.5 Reunion!! It is so exciting to have been a part of it all, even though I had such a small part of it all LOL!

Okay I will admit it. I can't sit still too long. I need to travel. This summer I skipped our usual travel intense summer because I wanted to be sure a was ahead on my daughter tuition payments. That said now I'm getting antsy. A few years ago I traveled so much for work,Orlando, Hawaii, Las Vegas, LA and even a nauseous trip to Block Island which I love. I was glad to kiss the ground at Bradley International Airport when I arrived home. My last trip on a plane was in February!! SO NOT like me! If I'm honest with myself I know the reason and he has a name. LOL

Well after sleeping in for a few hours on Sunday, I got around to editing the thousands of Miss CT photos from last weekend. I hope to finish posting them today! As you may notice, we have made some drastic improvements to our editing and posting process that will hopefully make the photos quicker and easier to view. Although the photos are posted in low resolution black & white the final purchased product will be in full color. This makes the photos much quicker to load on older computers. OHHHH!!! Before I forget congrats to two wonderful new titleholders! Sharalynn and Acacia! I had a photo session with both of the girls yesterday and jokingly wrote both their names on my phone list so I can learn to spell them correctly since they both have unique names! Today I am hoping to get the final photos posted to my online ordering site so check back later!

Nicole & Louis made an excellent choice for their reception. I had never been to Il Palio www.ilpalioct.com but I'm certain to return. The warmth of the rooms made me dig out my warming gels as I new I just had to capture everything just the way it was. Restaurant manager Cynthia Robinson made sure everything was just perfect. Kevin Totoian and his band Tangled Vine www.tangledvine.com played classic rock all night long and everything was just perfect! One of Nicole friends even sat in with the band for an impromptu performance. The cake from Lorriane a Sweet Designs www.sweetdesignscakes.com didn't disappoint as usual I've been a fan of her work for years and even toted one of her creations all the way to Manhattan for my own daughters birthday recently.

My first wedding of the season was fantastic!! Bobbie & Marcie are such a fun loving couple! Marcie's puppy made an excellent little model and posed with the rings, invitation and bouquet like a pro! I just hope she forgives me for not actually coming thru with the car ride we promised her every time we wanted her to perk up for a photo!

Amazing "faces" like former child model & up and coming actress Alexis French are often turmed away from the fashion industry due to height restrictions.

I just got a casting notice from America's Next Top Model and if my eye's haven't deceived me they are searching for ladies UNDER five, foot seven inches?? IS THAT a "TYRA"PO?? If not,I'm very excited about this. As a photographer, I've never had a great preference to photograph only tall models. I know designers love the way their clothes hang on the taller gals on the runway, but I have always preferred girls with smaller statures and even a little weight on them to photograph well, especially facially! Is the fashion industry finally getting a clue?? I often have girls in my studio who want to get into modeling ,but I have to let them know that most agencies will not let them past the receptionist unless the are at least 5'7" or 5'9" in most cases. Only once have I known of an exception and the teen had a face that could bring traffic to a halt. She only got her chance because after being turned away by the receptionst at an open call an agent at Ford Models caught a glimspe of her heading to a coffee shop across the street and herded her back into the agency. She ended up modeling for many cosmetic companies!!

After our shoot in Orlando, I headed over to the Strawberry Festival in Plant City. I got some great shots of Taylor Swift!! I wasn't really expecting to meet her but, well I just sort of did! She is very sweet and yes she IS as beautiful as she looks on TV!
