Law vs Foran High School Football Game Thanksgiving 2009
It was great to see so many old friends at the game today. I'm constantly seeing young faces that look vaguely familiar only to see them run up to an old classmate of mine and ask for money for the snack bar. I've decided I love shooting football. I had so much fun today!

No photos sorry!!! :( I wasn't allowed a camera BUT...
It has been a long wonderful week! Thursday evening I was lucky enough to sit back stage at the 25th Anniversary concert of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as part of the ADA loop (at least I think that is what it is called). It was an experience I will never forget! I got to see Jerry Lee Lewis, Crosby, Stills & Nash, James Taylor, Bonnie Rait, Sam Moore, Jeff Beck, Stevie Wonder, Sting, Darlene Love, Bruce Springsteen, Dion, BB King, Tom Hanks, Jackson Browne, John Fogerty,Simon & Garfunkel, Johnny Legend and well I just missed Billy Joel. What was more amazing was being able to see what was going on both in front of the stage and the organization behind the stage. The bands hanging out and greeting each other before they went out and oh yeah one brief encounter with Paul Simon in the hall (so familiar to me I didn't even blink). Most of these guys faces where plastered on my wall during high school and it seemed like they where old friends. I cried during Sounds of Silence and watched Steve Wonder lipsync backstage to "Bridge Over Troubled Water". I didn't get home until 3:30 am the next morning and had to head to the studio the next day but I never got tied I was so excited!

Check out our new photogenics website!!
Why a separate website for photogenics?? Well because I needed a website that is simple to use and easy to navigate for my pageant clients. Also, I love photographing weddings, but with both specialties I felt is would be easier for each type of client to find what they are looking for specifically and quickly. I'm always amazing when I get on a website and I can't figure how to use it or what the headers really mean. Are you getting married?? Well that new website is coming soon!

Nope, it's not a moldy cantaloupe!

Well tonight I did something I rarely do. I was picking my daughter up from a class trip and looked up to see the biggest moon I'd ever seen. After I dropped everyone off I headed out with my camera to find an unobstructed spot to take a few pics. I honestly wasn't expecting much, but I surprised myself big time. I'm beside myself with this image.

What is important in life!
Every once in a while I get a bit of affirmation that what I do is important. Inever became a doctor (what I would have told you in 4th grade) or cancer researcher, but I never realize how much joy photographs bring and the value they hold as time moves on. Today I read a CNN article about a man whose house exploded his first priority was to know that parents where safe and sound but check out the second part! I couldn't help but grin a bit!
"Within five minutes of receiving the call, police escorted Mike Bowes to his home. He could see the fire light up the dark sky from afar. Anxious neighbors gathered in the park nearby. He was relieved to find his parents together on the sidewalk.
"My parents are alive; my neighbors are alive," he said. "It's an inconvenience, but we'll get through it."
In another coincidence, one of the first firefighters to arrive on scene was Mike Bowes' cousin, Tom Bowes.
Tom Bowes, a firefighter for the past eight years, scrambled into the house to salvage old albums with wedding and baby photos amid the flames.
But everything else -- the clothes, electronics and furniture -- were destroyed."-Excerpt reposted from Stephanie Chen CNN's article "Dispatcher fields call from own house."

We played hooky yesterday!!! The Big E

My dogs are still barking! Yesterday Len from Len's Photography and I hit the Big E! Well we did have a little business there. It was Connecticut day! Miss Connecticut Sharilynn Kusiak and Miss Connecticut's Outstanding Teen Acacia Courtney had an appearance (see the parade photo) also Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell was there with her foot guard. As a photographer, I would have probably cropped this photo a bit differently but Dustin Hoffman's twin in the background makes the shot IMO!!

Destination wedding anyone??
Okay I will admit it. I can't sit still too long. I need to travel. This summer I skipped our usual travel intense summer because I wanted to be sure a was ahead on my daughter tuition payments. That said now I'm getting antsy. A few years ago I traveled so much for work,Orlando, Hawaii, Las Vegas, LA and even a nauseous trip to Block Island which I love. I was glad to kiss the ground at Bradley International Airport when I arrived home. My last trip on a plane was in February!! SO NOT like me! If I'm honest with myself I know the reason and he has a name. LOL

Geeze looks like I need to make a new blog headers today. Hmmm...what will I do..
Anyone have an idea??
What a week!

Well after sleeping in for a few hours on Sunday, I got around to editing the thousands of Miss CT photos from last weekend. I hope to finish posting them today! As you may notice, we have made some drastic improvements to our editing and posting process that will hopefully make the photos quicker and easier to view. Although the photos are posted in low resolution black & white the final purchased product will be in full color. This makes the photos much quicker to load on older computers. OHHHH!!! Before I forget congrats to two wonderful new titleholders! Sharalynn and Acacia! I had a photo session with both of the girls yesterday and jokingly wrote both their names on my phone list so I can learn to spell them correctly since they both have unique names! Today I am hoping to get the final photos posted to my online ordering site so check back later!

Nicole & Louis Il Palio Restaurant

Nicole & Louis made an excellent choice for their reception. I had never been to Il Palio www.ilpalioct.com but I'm certain to return. The warmth of the rooms made me dig out my warming gels as I new I just had to capture everything just the way it was. Restaurant manager Cynthia Robinson made sure everything was just perfect. Kevin Totoian and his band Tangled Vine www.tangledvine.com played classic rock all night long and everything was just perfect! One of Nicole friends even sat in with the band for an impromptu performance. The cake from Lorriane a Sweet Designs www.sweetdesignscakes.com didn't disappoint as usual I've been a fan of her work for years and even toted one of her creations all the way to Manhattan for my own daughters birthday recently.

Is that a typo Tyra????

Amazing "faces" like former child model & up and coming actress Alexis French are often turmed away from the fashion industry due to height restrictions.
I just got a casting notice from America's Next Top Model and if my eye's haven't deceived me they are searching for ladies UNDER five, foot seven inches?? IS THAT a "TYRA"PO?? If not,I'm very excited about this. As a photographer, I've never had a great preference to photograph only tall models. I know designers love the way their clothes hang on the taller gals on the runway, but I have always preferred girls with smaller statures and even a little weight on them to photograph well, especially facially! Is the fashion industry finally getting a clue?? I often have girls in my studio who want to get into modeling ,but I have to let them know that most agencies will not let them past the receptionist unless the are at least 5'7" or 5'9" in most cases. Only once have I known of an exception and the teen had a face that could bring traffic to a halt. She only got her chance because after being turned away by the receptionst at an open call an agent at Ford Models caught a glimspe of her heading to a coffee shop across the street and herded her back into the agency. She ended up modeling for many cosmetic companies!!

FORMER CONTESTANTS FOR MISS AMERICA'S OUTSTANDING TEEN MAKE IT TO THE TOP 36
ON AMERICAN IDOL
Two former state titleholders continue on in their quest
to become the American Idol
Orlando, FL-- February 12, 2009- The Miss America's Outstanding Teen Organization announced today that two of their former contestants have made it to the next round on American Idol. Arianna Afsar, 17, was Miss California's Outstanding Teen 2005 and Jasmine Murray, 17, was Miss Mississippi's Outstanding Teen 2007.
Afsar originally auditioned in Phoenix, AZ and Murray auditioned in Jacksonville, FL. Afsar was the first runner-up to Miss America's Outstanding Teen 2006 and started a mentoring program called “Adopt a Grandparent.” Murray was a top 10 finalist and has received recognition for her outstanding community service with the U.S. Dream Academy. Both girls received scholarship money for their achievements.
Miss America's Outstanding Teen, the “little sister” to the Miss America Organization, is a scholarship-based program offering accomplished teens the opportunity to be awarded funds for college. The program promotes scholastic achievement, creative accomplishment, healthy living and community involvement for America's teens. In the past four years, the organization has made available more than $3 million in college scholarships.
"Jasmine and Arianna are two perfect examples of what this country needs as the next America Idol. They are both academic leaders, community activists, and dedicated volunteers,” said Kim Parrish, president of MAOT. “They are well-rounded teens and would set a shining example for other teens to follow. MAOT is proud of these two former contestants."
Both girls will continue on in the competition which can be seen nationally on FOX on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at 8 p.m. EST / 7 p.m. CST

How do I get my child involved in modeling or acting??
.jpg)
.jpg)
Tis, the season to find an manager or agent as the agencies are preparing their model rosters for the upcoming season. This means they are actively looking for new faces this time of year. There will be open calls etc. Many times I am asked well just how do I get my child into modeling??? My daughter has been a model with a CT agency and a major NYC agency for five years now and I love it more than she does unfortunately. Just what are the agencies looking for??
a) Someone who can trek to the city 2-3 or more a week on short notice!
b) Size 5 & size 10 clothes sizes are most popular (for print)!
c) Kid's that can read beyond their years (for acting)
d) Kid's that can take direction well and have long attention spans.
What are they looking for as far as "a look". That I can't tell you sometimes, I am sometimes surprised at who or who doesn't get called in to sign with an agency, but sometimes I'm told it's due to supply in demand of a certain "type". Any sometimes you need to resubmit again and again until they have an opening for your childs age and "type".
One thing I am certain of is you don't need expensive photos to start with. I hear horror stories in this area all the time. You don't need a $500 photo shoot for a six month year old. Babies generally need a good snapshot and older children just snapshots until you get an agent or manager. However, if you have some professional photos is shows the prospective agents you are serious about modeling and are also ready to go to work. Many will just ask for a good clear snap shot. Once you are in the game, it's time to get a compcard going for modleing and a good headshot for acting. But a good basic shoot shouldn't be too expensive. At our studio we charge $295 for a basic 5 look shoot which it a good starting point for ages 4-early teens. Younger kids and babies can use a one or two looks shoot at $100.00 but again the agents generally use snapshots for the babies because they change so quickly. We can also show you how to submit to agencies and how to prepare a resume.
Just no explanation.

I'm going back to school!!!
Yup it's true, I can't believe it! Well not like real school but I'm taking a web design class to I can take charge of my main website completely. For ten years, I had a wonderful webbie, but she recently retired due to a serious illness. I'll miss her but I feel the need to take charge of my website design. Recently I've noticed that my website isn't behaving when viewed with the Safari Browser. We are working on it, but until then if you want the best experience, try to view my website from an alternate browser like Internet explorer.

Inaugural Balls

Oh my it is that time again. It proves to me that I need to clean my desk as the last set of photos I took at the Texas Society Black Tie & Boots Ball as still sitting on top.
Want to know what it is like to attend an Inaugural Ball? Well I've been to two,one for Ronald Reagan & George H Bush in 1985 and one for Dick Cheney and George W Bush in 2005. Every time I go, I say never again. It is very exciting, don't get me wrong, but I've decided there is only one way to go comfortably and that is to get room in the same complex and arrive there a week in advance. But that is not realistic at $400+ a night. The other way is to be actually related to the President and by any stretch of the the imagination,I am not. Did I mention it is freezing out?? Now the other kicker is you are dressed in a gown and carrying your coat because there is a hour long wait for the coat room. In 1985 there was pig pile of furs on the floor right after the entrance, where people decided to give up, toss it and hope it was still there on the way out. I've never seen anything like since. When you get in, you can't really move to well (check out the photos) or dance really. So if you think you are missing something, think again. I'm going to go to Bow Tie Cinemas as watch it all on the big screen! Photos By Clay & Company and Matthew Gammon

My girls!

The girls that work for me never know what is in store for them when they walk thru the door for work. They could be cleaning the bathroom or standing in for titleholder or a celebrity. A few days ago I got an itch to make up some new backgrounds and test some new lighting. So enlisted Sam to get out of her sweatpants and get into a gown from the prop room. The lighting I was testing didn't work the way I'd hoped, and I quickly reverted back to a past formula and got some cute shots. Here is one of them. You are a good sport Sam.

Three couples will get their wedding pictures taken/retaken FREE this year!
Did your best wedding photo look like this???

I mentioned a while back that I had some exciting news coming but then the holidays hit and it all got crazy around here. We are excited to announce not one but THREE wedding contests!
Pay-it-Forward: Are you a great couple or (know one) that gives back to the community in someway, but have been hit by this economic crisis or other have other things such as a tragic event ruin your ability to hire a professional photographer to capture your memories at your wedding?? If so email us your story! We will pick one couple on February 14th to receive a free wedding coverage courtesy of Catherine Fiehn Photography. Please include these items in your email: Names and contact info, date of the event & town/place of event ,a description of your situation, and an explanation of how you serve your country or community! You may also submit up to three low-resolution photos attached to your email to document your community service, but they are not required. One couple will get free wedding day coverage and two others will receive a post wedding photo session.
I've-Got-To-See-a-Picture-of-THAT!!!: Are you having a crazy, neat-o amazing or unique wedding?? The very type of wedding that would be cool for us to photograph?? Are you a same-sex couple getting married in scuba gear under water? Getting married at the Plaza and the Jackson Five are all in your wedding party or is your wedding cake being made out of "twinkies"?? You get the idea!! Email us about your wedding plans and on February 14th we will be giving away a free wedding coverage!!
Let-us-Not-Forget- Did you get married in the past two years or are celebrating a milestone anniversary but could not afford a professional wedding photographer or did your photos came out so bad you are afraid to show them to your friends?? Email us your story along with your wedding date and on February 14th, one lucky couple will get a free post-bridal session of their dreams courtesy of Catherine Fiehn Photography.
Please put the title of the contest you are entering in the subject of the email. All travel/hotel out of the 50 mile range Connecticut (with the exception of pay-it-foward) is the responsibility of the entrant. For example, if you are getting married on a glacier in Alaska, we might consider that, and your coverage will be free but you will have to pay to get us there!!

Saint Mary's School Class of...I'm not telling.

Tonight I went to a small class reunion for my elementary school. I had a blast, we talked all night. Somehow, it's different then a high school reunion. These kids where like brothers and sister to me for 8 years as we didn't didn't switch classes like we did in high school. I didn't realize how much fun it would be. If you've never organized one, try it. I can't wait for next year!!

The Trouble with Len!

Okay, my friend Len,has "found" photoshop. Every few weeks or so he takes a photo of me and puts it where it shouldn't be. Unfortunately, I live for his emails because more often then not they make my coffee fly out my nose. Here is his latest piece of work. As you can tell, I'm not a proud person. Humor is the best part of life. Sigh!

Christmas in Connecticut
Saturday, November 29, 2008

Well, this isn't a reunion year for me but I did get to join Tina Fey at her class reunion on 30 Rock eposide entitle REUNION as her classmate Patty Costello. The show will air on December 4th on NBC at 9:31. I'm not 100% sure I didn't get edited out but look for me anyways! If I ended up up on the floor (yes they shot film) as least a got to spend a few days with Tina & Alec. Pictured here is my high school BFF Karla who lives in Florida now. Somehow she ended up a model down there for a while. Could it be I took a few too many photos of her while where in high school?

Fun. fun, fun
We will soon be announcing an awesome contest for engaged couples!! Keep posted for details that will be revealed on December 1st!!
Sam.....

I caught my make up artist Samantha moonlighting playing football on Wednesday night! She told me she couldn't come into work because she had the runs! I guess I won't fire her but this was too darn funny to ignore! She had no idea I was there shooting these pics so the expression on her face when she came in and saw them was priceless!!

Ioannis-A blast from the past!!
When I was a teen I had my first job at a photography studio here in Milford, my boss Steve Cooper had this friend who was over all the time his name was Ioannis and he did really cool airbrush album covers. Sometimes I'd be quietly numbering the backs of wedding proofs and I get called in so they could use one of my body parts for a model or something. Here is a cover I found that I have from those days, I think something of mine may have been used in it. LOL I was just sent a listing for this show! I can't wait to go see it!

It's almost Thanksgiving!

I'm doing something absolutely crazy this Thanksgiving. Aside from the economy it has been an incredible year and I have a lot to give thanks for this Thursday. I've been to Hawaii, was on 30 Rock and made some great new friends! I'll be heading back to NYC this weekend for a bit, it's interesting but after doing some statistics here at the studio I figured out my average client lives in New York City, weird huh?? Someday I'm going to go to the parade there, but notthis year. I'm sure I will be posting so photos of what I'm doing soon!

PDN Conference
I attended the Photo District News Conference in New York City yesterday. It was great, but my feet are hurting and the guy from Oasis Spa was worth every penny. Coffeetable book are BIG this year and it was great to be able to compare companies first hand to find my bride's the best of the best in quality. I also sat in on some lectures from Dennis Reggie (who was the one to photograph the JFK Jr wedding, which still has to be one of my biggest career regrets. (I'll tell you the story another time as I don't like to talk about it.) and a few others. We will be offering some new and exciting products for our wedding, boudior & baby clients this season as well as offering a great photo booth at events!! Details to come soon.

Deb, Mike, Mike, Mike and a few other nice people. Spring House, Block Island , Rhode Island
I loved shooting this wedding, first of all because I am apologetically bad with names. These guys made it easy for me, because every guy at the wedding was named Mike. The second reason, was it was at Spring House and on Block Island two of my favorite places in the world and I had so much fun with these guys. I could tell that Deb loved taking pictures and if the groom didn't, he faked it at least. For a teenage wedding I think they have a good shot at it. They say you never can tell:)

I never seen such ear to ear grins on these guys!

Well on Wednesday I decided to play hooky from the studio and head up to the Big E with a group of my friend's some of who are in town for a big wedding this weekend that we will shoot. I just happen to mention to them that on the way up I needed to stop of at the Connecticut State Capitol Building to snap a few photos of former Miss CT Heidi Voight who is now working there. Well for some reason, these guys all jumped in and helped me with the shoot, even volunteering to hold Heidi's coffee and purse, go figure. Pictured are front Ted Fiorito, Len Caseria, Heidi Voight & Matthew Gammon.
